Match Report

Flamstead Blacks vs Haven Lions 18th February 2012

Match Report by Bryony Freer

This match was always going to be a tough one as Haven are top of the league and haven’t yet lost a match. The weather conditions weren’t exactly ideal (cold temperature and extremely strong winds), but we were determined to get some points!
The first quarter started well for Flamstead as our tactic of short sharp passes worked well in the very strong wind, and at one point we were 5-2 up! Haven then realised that their long passes were not working and managed to claw back some goals so that the final score of the quarter was 5-6 to them.
The second quarter was steady with lots of interceptions from both teams. The wind was making it difficult to shoot for both teams but Nikki and Claire still managed to score some amazing goals! The Haven umpire had her eyes on Phil’s feet the whole quarter pulling her up for footwork practically every time that she got the ball – frustrating us all, but we soldiered on only losing this quarter 9-11!
In the third quarter the wind (and rain now) was taking its toll on us and their defence were making it hard to get the ball to our shooters. They managed to increase their lead more significantly, so the quarter ended 12-18 to Haven.
Only 6 behind, surely we could get this back? Well, we started well getting 2 goals in a row, but this wasnt to last long. We tried our best, but Haven really pushed on in this quarter scoring many more goals. However we managed to scrape one point by getting more than half (just) of their goals. Final score 14-26 to Haven.
