Match report – Saturday 20th October 2012

Match report by Tracy Wells

Flamstead Blacks Vs Connexions Tornadoes: 20th October 2012

Court conditions were damp and a little slippery under foot, but weather remained dry for the whole match. We were only a squad of 7, so no allowances for injury this week.  Tornadoes were blessed with a few extra players and were able to add in ‘fresh legs’ during the game.  It was a welcome back to Jess for playing her first game this season, following an operation earlier this summer.

A well paced first quarter was achieved, with some great interceptions by defence and we turned over several of their Centre passes to our advantage.  Our shooting D was tightly marked by their defence and this quarter ended in 8-4 to Tornadoes.

During the second quarter, time had to be called on both sides due to injuries, our Kerry being one of them, who soldiered on, once strapping  was applied to fingers. Conditions under foot caused some footwork faults on both sides, and coupled with some inaccurate passes and tight defence from the Tornadoes, the resulting score was 15-10 to Tornadoes. Flamstead Blacks came off this quarter feeling a little disgruntled, as it appeared there was some biased umpiring from their opposing teams’ umpire, but we encouraged each other to use this positively in the final 2 quarters.

Third quarter award goes to Crippsy for keeping her cool throughout the game as her opponent used an annoying, loud, distracting tactic by consistently shouting in her face coupled with several slaps to the back of the head! Despite this, Crippsy and Nicky held their own and managed to score an additional 5 goals bringing the score to 15-23 to Tornadoes.

We continued to try and narrow the score difference during the 4th quarter, and managed to turn over their defence in the D to score 6 goals this quarter. Tornadoes’ GD continued to be very vocal throughout the final leg of the match and it was also decided that she should be awarded a Bafta for the most over dramatised fall during the game! Spacing across the court with some more accurate passing was achieved but was not enough to turn the score over.  The final score was 21-29 to Tornadoes.

Many thanks to Jo from Phoneix for umpiring our match this week and for her positive comments throughout the game and for Emma who brought along her supporters as usual!
