Match Report – 17th March 2012

Match Report by Nicola

Flamstead Blacks v St Alberts

An early match with rain forecast and against a team who had beaten us first time around this season.  We were missing some of our team but were able to borrow some players from Greens.  We knew we stood a chance of evening things up this time around.

The match started promisingly, with quick goals scored and lots of turnovers.  By the end of the first quarter we were ahead 12-4.  In the second quarter, the play was quite even, with both teams scoring the same number of goals, meaning that we finished the first half still 8 goals ahead.

During the half time break, St Albert’s obviously gave themselves a good talking to and had a swap around of players and came out fighting.  As a result we struggled to keep our 8 goal lead and despite some great defending and shooting, we finished the third quarter, still winning (25-19) but our lead was down to 6 goals.  Sometime during the second half of the game, the promised rain arrived and the slippery ball and court slowed both teams down.  We knew that we were going to have a battle on our hands keeping the lead.

Despite our best efforts during the last quarter, we saw the lead slip away.  Before long we were drawing, and then losing, we managed to pull back to a draw again at one point but St Albert’s finished too strongly for us and we finished 30-28 down.  A disappointing end to the game as were winning for most of it… but a nice game against a very friendly team.

Thanks to Sarah J, Sandra and Amber for playing for us, in the rain and as promised, no injuries…!
