23rd January 2010

Match report from Tracy Wells – Dacorum Ladies V Flamstead Blacks

On Saturday 23rd 2010, Blacks played our first match of the year with a bit of trepidation. First, knowing that we all had not played a match in a while and secondly, we had an idea that this team had beaten us previously!

Court conditions were damp and at times slippery, but we were all grateful for a dry game, with no snow stopping play.

There was a positive start by both teams in the first quarter, resulting in only a 2 goal difference 8 -10 to Dacorum Ladies. It was obvious that Kerry (GD) must have had her ‘ready brek’ and there was some great work in our scoring circle by Crippsie (GS) and Jenny (GA).

Spirits remained high as we moved into the 2nd quarter and all team members worked hard to maintain the score.  Great work continued in the scoring circle, despite their GD frequently intercepting the ball and was promptly named the ‘octopus!’. Two injuries followed by Dacorum Ladies – a sprained ankle and a fall, and you’ll be glad to hear it had nothing to do with Wellsie!  Fortunately, they were blessed with extra players to replenish their injured team.

During this quarter, we had a tendency to rush our passes and our play, coupled with some great defending from the other team, they managed to create an 8 goal lead 16-24.

Team spirit and endurance remained strong in the 3rd quarter.  Noticeable improvement throughout the game on footwork and we endeavoured to slow down our passes, keeping them more short, sharp and accurate. We continued to achieve our centre passes but their defence remained strong and their shooters never missed a shot – the score was 25 – 37 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

In usual ‘Becky’ style, positive encouragement was given and we all went back on with an attempt to keep the score in a similar vain. Flamsteads’ defence kept up a good fight and there was some great passing and feeding into the circle by Katie (WA) and Phil (C).  Unfortunately, during this quarter, their centre had to be subbed, due to a hand/finger injury and she was promptly taken to A & E! The final score was 35 – 47.

Good sportsmanship was found in both teams and despite the disappointment of losing to them again, a great match was had by all!

I am very proud to be a part of Flamstead Netball and feel that we always display a friendly but competitive attititude.

A big thanks also goes to Karen, who stepped in at the last minute to Umpire for us!
