12th December 2009

Match report from Louise Rumistrzewicz
Flamstead v Abbey Flyers 2
On Saturday 12th December, we played Abbey Flyers……. It was a cold day, but we all started in good spirits, determined to play well. We lost the toss, so elected to shoot at the far end as the sun was particularly strong which did affect the shooters throughout the game. The sun was not the only distraction in the circle. It soon became apparent that the opposing team had a technique of marking the ball from close behind the player and managed to deflect the ball so well it looked as if it was knocked out of the shooters hands on some occasions! Despite this, Fern and Nicola did an amazing job in the circle – they fought on to the bitter end and we were all so proud they were on our team. The score after the first quarter was 5-7 to them.
Undeterred, we kept our heads high and went back on. Unfortunately, there were a number of occasions where players were pulled up and the ball was passed to the other team. Another new rule was discovered during this quarter – it appeared that Katie (playing superbly as WA) has extremely supple legs and the umpire felt that she was spreading them a little too wide around the circle! The score at half time was 11-13 to them.
Our team spirit was strong, although we were feeling a little frustrated by some of the comments that were being thrown about the court by some of the opposing members of the team. Our frustration came out in our fighting spirit on court, but, partly due to another new rule that we were unaware of (the opposing centre made some fantastic interceptions by running into the circle on a number of occasions) the score after the 3rd quarter was 13-19 to them.
We kept our heads high and did not lose any more in the goal difference in the final quarter – the final score was 20-25.
Despite the difficulties of the game, I am proud to say that I play for Flamstead – we played a fantastic game with great determination and encouragement from everyone. Nicola and Fern had a difficult job but worked brilliantly in the circle; Katie kept her legs together (!) and zoomed about, calling and cheering enthusiastically; Claire had endless energy as centre and was amazing despite having an injured hand and a difficult opponent; Kerry made countless interceptions, flying about as usual and Becky (our captain of the day) was a confident GK and a great support to the rest of the team calling, cheering and encouraging throughout the match. Well done everyone – we rocked!
